1

How much does midwifery care cost?

Homebirth costs about half of what an unmedicated vaginal birth in the hospital costs.  Depending on your copay, etc, you could pay less out of pocket for a homebirth.  The midwifery care fee includes prenatal, birth and postpartum care, on-call availability, and lactation consultation.  Midwifery fees in our area range from $6000-8000.  Our current fee for midwifery care is $7000.  Payment plans and credit card payments are available; however we cannot bill any insurance other than Healthcare Ministry plans.

What happens during a homebirth when there's an emergency?

Midwives are trained to resolve many complications at home.  For complications which arise needing hospital skills, emergency medical professionals may be called and care transferred to the hospital. Most transfers are non-urgent (usually by private vehicle) and arise from a decision for more monitoring, pain relief, or tools which only the hospital can provide.   Our practice currently has a less than 5% transfer rate with half of those births being completed by cesarean.

Is vaginal breech birth safe?

Vaginal breech birth (VBB) is a good option for women who are healthy, well-informed, nourished, and carrying a baby to term.  VBB with a trained and experienced midwife (or OB) has similar risk outcomes for babies as does cesarean breech birth, and much lower risk to mom and future babies because of the risk of surgery and downstream risk during VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean).  If you'd like more information please see our Breech Birth page and/or schedule a free consult.

Can I birth my twins at home?

Our care is individualized and we will help resource you to decide how much or how little medical involvement or technology you choose for your pregnancy, without fear or coercion.  Twin pregnancy is often over-managed with excessive fetal surveillance, and prenatal visits generating more fear than excitement.

Midwifery care will support you in developing a foundation of health which can help you to grow healthy babies, carry them to term and birth them in the privacy of your home without intervention or separation of babies from you or each other.

For the most part the birth of twins proceeds as singleton births do, only the events occur twice.  But there are risks to consider which are unique to twins.  The type of twin pregnancy has an effect on which risks are possible with di/di twins who are both head-down having the least complications.

The early postpartum period with twins may be the most challenging; with two babies sleep and feeding schedules which sometimes are staggered.  Extra robust help during this time period can make an enormous difference.
